Beth's Cause
I have two wonderful and beautiful boys affected by autism. One has asperger's syndrome, the other, classic high functioning autism. The incidence of
asperger's syndrome in our area is very high, however, the resources in our area are very low.

Autism is marked by severe social deficits, yet we have very limited options for social skills therapies that are desperately needed for these children in this
area. The ones we have are covered in waiting lists, or beyond most parents' ability to obtain because of the financial burdens associated with autism.

Even more desperately needed are appropriate after school and summer programs so that parents are able to work and shoulder the financial
responsibilities of their families, as well as all the therapies that are not covered by insurance.  If this type situation was  available to parents, a great deal
of their financial, emotional, and mental stress would be reduced, allowing them to spend more quality time with their children, and afford things their
children need so they may be able to independently function as adults and become productive members of our society.

My dream and mission is to see a center started in this area where these children have a safe haven for after care and the summer care, when school is
out , where they have an individualized program to receive social skills therapies, occupational therapy, speech therapy, help with homework, dyslexia,
and/or dysgraphia (which often accompanies autism), mentoring, sensory therapies, or whatever they are needing help with.  The key is that it must be
affordable for the parents. This would alleviate many financial burdens associated with autism by allowing parents to work, and eliminating constant travel
to and from therapies, respite, and other weekly services.

A group of parents are working in our area to try to make this and a school for aspergers a reality in the very near future.

We are in the process of forming a non profit organization with the goal of creating a center  like this through volunteers and donations. I would like to see
centers like this in all areas where resources are limited for these children, and even special schools for those who do not have appropriate educational
programs in place.

The number of families affected by autism across the world is staggering. These children need our help!

I will update here once the non profit is formed and we have a website in place.

Thanks so much for taking the time to learn about my cause!
